HOW TO WRITE A CV?

What is a CV and how can it help me get my dream job?
The word Curriculum Vitae literally translated means the story of your life. The words Curriculum Vitae are usually abbreviated to CV or C.V.
Your CV is a very important document; with it rest your hopes and dreams for the future - that next step up the career ladder, a better position, more money, new challenges, etc. Your CV therefore has to represent the best you have to offer if you do not want to miss out on that job you saw which was perfect for you.

These days Dolphin Recruitment receives a lot of CVs for each advertised position - jobs advertised online can often attract hundreds of applicants. So your CV has to be just that little bit special to stand out.

Of course your CV can continue to work in your favour even after you have been put forward for an interview through Dolphin Recruitment. It can help you at an interview by carefully focusing the interviewer ´s mind on your good points and on your achievements. Once you have left the interview it will continue to work in your favour as the interviewer will probably reread it before making a decision, either on who should be invited to the second interview stage or who the job should be offered to.

When it comes to salary negotiations Dolphin Recruitment will do the negotiating on your behalf however a well written CV can help. If your CV conveys your full worth you are likely to get a higher salary offer than you might have done with a poorer CV. So do not skimp on the time you spend on writing a CV as it will probably be a false economy.
Dolphin Recruitment is here to help you and we will advise you on your finished CV if necessary. Any suggested changes will be made prior to your CV being sent to perspective employers.

How to write a CV ?
For all but very senior positions you should aim to fit your CV on one to two sides of an standard A4 sheet of paper. For senior positions (practice manager) or practitioner positions two or three sheets are acceptable, but a well-presented short CV will always tend to impress and impact more than lots of detail spread over a number of sheets. Always try to use as few words as possible. In CV writing, like advertising, "less is more". This means you need to think carefully about the words you use - make sure each one is working for you - if any aren´t, remove them or replace them. Never use two words when one will do.

In the CV heading you can write your general information:

  • Name
  • Surname
  • Local address
  • E-mail address
  • Phone number
  • Date of Birth

(If applying for an overseas job, please remember to include your international dialing code. Include your mobile/cell phone number if you are going to relocate soon.

CV Skills Summary
The Skills Summary section of your CV includes your main skills. You should only include keywords in his section, do not go into lengthy descriptions of your skills.

CV Objective / Personal Profile
The CV Objective, sometimes also referred to as CV Personal Profile states "What is my next step in my career?" This should be a short, concise statement that informs the employer what kind of position you are looking for. The type of position and the role should be included as well.

Education on your CV
List all your qualifications in this section. Include all of your education including certifications from non-academic institutions, especially those that are related to this job vacancy. If you have more work experience than qualifications, put your work experience before your qualifications.

Professional or Work Experience description on your CV
This section includes any work experience that you have in the field you are applying for. Even if the post was unpaid, voluntary, summer job, internship, co-op experience or extracurricular activity. When listing these work experiences include what kind of job was it (internship/full time/ part time etc).
Each job detail should include this basic information

  • Title of position
  • Length you held the post
  • Responsibilities
  • Name of organization.

Include also languages (spoken/written/understood). Computer Skills (include title of software package and proficiency level), Research Skills and other skills that are not in the rest of your CV.
If you are job hunting for various positions it is a good idea to have several CV´s with different profiles or objectives. For example, you can have a CV for a dental nurse position and the other for a dental receptionist position. Your dental nurse CV can highlight achievements in this area and duties undertaken in detail, the CV would be tuned to that particular in terms of job descriptions and achievements.
